WORKINGTON Town’s battling U15 scholarship side could hold their heads high after giving Super League Salford a run for their money at the weekend.
Coach Jonty Gorley believes there was a marked improvement in their form from the previous week’s encounter at Whitehaven.
In the end the youngsters went down 40-14 but the scoreline did not reflect the match, which was touch and go for the majority of the game until tiredness told in the final 10 minutes and Salford ran in five tries.
But at half-time the City Reds were just 10-4 ahead and, if it were not for errors gifting Salford good field possession, it could have been even closer still.
Workington never gave up and there were tries for Joe Bell, Joe Kirkup and Josh Proctor, with Sean Mumberson tagging on a conversion.
Gorley was pleased with their efforts, saying: “We played much better than we did against Whitehaven. It was just 10-4 at half-time. Wfter last week we had worked a lot on our defence and they did improve in that area.”
