Workington golfers win chance to defend English title

WORKINGTON golfers landed the Cumbria Inter-Club Strokeplay Championship and will now represent the county at the English Club Championship at Woodbridge in Suffolk in September for the fifth time.
Workington won by seven shots at Maryport Golf Club with a combined score of 441, with Ulverston finishing seven shots behind.
The West Cumbrians won the English Club Championship last year.
Mark Cowen and Brad Hannah posted the best scores of the opening round with their three-over-par 73 and Will Bowe’s round of 75 gave them a morning total of 221.
Workington continued from where they left off in the afternoon, with Cowen shooting 72, Hannah returning 75 and Bowe improving to 73.
