Michael Braithwaite has been awarded the JB Wilkinson Shield in recognition for his success on his plumbing course.

Apprentice Michael works for his father Nigel, who runs Home Improvers at Motherby, near Penrith, but he travels to the city college every week to do the theory work that goes towards his National Vocational Qualification in plumbing.

The shield, from the Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering, is given to the apprentice who has the best workshop portfolio and exam results in the north of England. It is for those under the age of 21.

Course tutor Grahame Gilbert said: “Michael has done extremely well in his studies.

“In winning this award he has successfully beaten all of the competition in the north of England. Michael has excelled in his portfolio and exams.”

College principal Moira Tattersall added: “I am delighted that Michael has won this award.”

The formal presentation of the award will be held in October in Wardley Legion Club, Gateshead, where the presentation of the award will be made by the Master of the Worshipful Company of Plumbers.
