Second cup victory for Seaton

SEATON claimed their second piece of silverware this season when they lifted the SJR Building Contractors Cumberland Cup final - but they were made to work for it by a determined Distington outfit.
Seaton set off like a house on fire at the Cumbria Academy of Sport and were on the scoreboard after just three minutes when Andy McGlasson powered his way over the try line from close range and Chris Highton tagged on the extras.
Shortly after, winger Highton crossed out by the corner flag and then slotted over a superb touchline conversion to make it 12-0.
Then back came Distington as Gavin Martin forced his way over out wide on the last tackle and Clayton Sutton also slotted over the two-pointer from the touchline.
Brett Phillips brought Seaton back into the game when he slipped the ball to centre Mark Routledge and the former Workington Town player raced down the wing before popping the ball to supporting winger Chris George who crossed in the corner.
Highton had his kicking boots on and once more added the extras from out wide but that wasn’t the end of the first half action.
The last 15 minutes of the first half belonged to Distington, as they forced Seaton on to the back foot and they got their reward on the half-hour mark with a great try for Sutton.
Hooker Troy Armstrong made a good break and then he turned back inside and passed to the supporting Sutton who went over near the posts, leaving himself an easy conversion to bring Distington to within six points at 18-12.
But, with just one minute remaining of the first half, Seaton picked up a crucial score against the run of play.
Routledge popped up near the Distington line and went behind the defence to touch down, with Highton converting and Seaton went in at the break 24-12 ahead.
Seaton had a couple of chances in the second half but could not convert them into points until the 67th minute when they swung the ball from one side of the pitch to the other and centre Tony Roper crossed near the corner flag.
Another tough conversion for Highton but he proved himself up to the task to make it five from five.
Six minutes later Distington hit back when Daniel Dryden touched down following a great break from Sutton but the conversion was missed.
The final word went to Seaton when substitute Peter Watson proved unstoppable near the line and he crossed from 10 yards out, with Highton tagging on the extras for a full time score of 36-16.
The man of the match award went to hard-working Seaton prop Andy McGlasson but he was pushed hard by team-mate Highton and Distington’s Sutton, who also both had fantastic games.
