TOTAL FORWARD 355 Prime cattle, bulls and cows. 3837 prime sheep, 56 spring lambs.
Messrs Dodd of West View Limousin cross bullocks topped at 169.5p and 164.5p purchased by Mr Charles Kirkpatrick and Mr Sean McGimpsey. Mr Len Skelton of Low House Farm run of heifers averaged 167.5p for a Limousin cross heifer purchased by Mr Mike Atkinson. Messrs Pattinson & Son of Chalkfoot Farm heifers topped at 164.5p & 163.5p for a Limousin purchased by Bowland Foods and Mr Jim Mullholland. Messrs Addison of Greystone House sold a Simmental cross bullock for 896kg 144.5p £1294.72 purchased by Mr Alan Jones.
80 bulls once again were dearer than ever before. Mr Brian Hall of Ainstable Hall run of bulls averaged 161.5p and topped at 173.5p purchased by Mr Mike Atkinson. Messrs Jenkinson of Clifton Moor Farm bulls averaged 162.75p and topped at 165.5p & 164.5p purchased by Mr Charles Kirkpatrick and Mr Mike Atkinson. Messrs Watson of Sanders Close sold a Limousin bull for 163.5p purachased by Mr Mike Atkinson. Messrs Allison & Sons of Muirburn sold a Limousin bull for 864kg 149.5p £1291.68 purchased by Mr Alan Jones.
Another good show of prime sheep were forward. A good show of spring lambs were forward with trade buoyant. Most lambs were making two pounds a kilo and more. An overall average 208.13p was achieved.
Top price per head was £108 for a Texel lamb consigned by Messrs Ramsay of Dockray Hall, Wigton this lamb was also top price per kilo at 240p purchased by Mr John Blocklock on behalf of Mr Richard Harrison.
Prime hoggs were much dearer with the best meated Cheviots, Suffolks and Blackies making thirty to forty pounds above there weight.
Nice Continental hoggs could make 180p to 220p regular. Heavy hoggs 50kg to 65kg were twenty five pounds to thirty five pounds over the weight. Mule hoggs with plenty of meat could make twenty to twenty seven pounds over the weight.
An overall average of 156.3p was achieved.
Top price hogg per head was £103 for a pen of Beltex hoggs consigned by Messrs Hall of Inglewood Edge, Dalston purchased by Mr Robert Skelton.
Top price per kilo was 227.40p also for Messrs Hall Beltex hoggs this time purchased by Mr Andrew Dawson. Messrs Hall’s tremendous consignment of 36 hoggs averaged £91.32 and 207.16p per kilo.
Cast ewes and ram were a nice trade again. Nice Continental and Suffolk ewes would regular be sixty pounds plus. Mule ewes were regular forty five pounds plus. Swaledale ewes were twenty five pounds plus.

Prime cattle were at their dearest level yet seen. Prime heifers sold to 178.5p/kg (£1092.42) for a Limousin heifer from Thomas Tyson, East House, purchased by Mr Geoff Riley of Rawtenstall. He also paid 169.5p/kg (£984.80) for a Limousin heifer from John Bowe, Hunday. Bullocks sold to a top of 167.5p/kg (£961.45) again for a Hunday Limousin, which was purchased by Richard Lindsay. Prime bulls were also at their dearest level with a bar one being a Holstein Friesian. Top price of the day was 123.5p/kg for a HF from John Bowe, Hunday. The top priced Continental bull made £934.18 for a Simmental from Messrs Wilson, Monk Foss. A mixed show for quality saw best fleshed types sell to 185.6p/kg (£83.50) for a pen of 45kg Beltex X Hoggs shown by Messrs W H Steele, Annshill purchased by Messrs W Lindsay & Son and £94.50 (185.3p/kg) for a pen of 51kg Texel Hoggs also shown by Messrs Steele, purchased by Tony Harrison. Export fleshed hoggs sold in excess of 150p/kg while store sorts proved harder to cash, selling between £1 and £1.20 per kilo.

Trade in prime cattle was firmer with Bullocks averaging 159.3p and Heifers averaging 155.1p.A very mixed show for quality of prime hoggs but good well fleshed sorts were in demand selling to a top of 159.3p for 43Kg (£68.50) from Mr G Shankland, East Raffles. Top price per head was £73.50 for Texel X from Mr R Campbell, Kerricks. Overall average was 137.8p a fall of 5p on the week.A larger show of cast ewes and rams saw trade similar.

A full ringside of buyers saw prime cattle a very fast trade easily maintaining recent high rates. Top price of 170.5p for a Limousin heifer from J Crichton, Loughrigg Farm, purchased by W Kirkup, Longtown.Young bulls met good trade, selling to 156.5p for a Limousin from D & L Graham, South LambhillA top price for prime hoggs of 187.6p per kilo was realised for Texels from Messrs MacTaggart and to £86.50 per head for Texels from Messrs Bell, Mossband Hall. Good quality well fleshed lambs in all categories were easily sold and in short supply. The lightweight hoggets were a mixed show with many store type hoggs best suited to a store sale forward. Well fleshed hoggets were easily sold. Cast ewes and rams were another good show, although bidding was sharper trade was cheaper to average £44.91 overall.

Spring Lambs peaked at 202.4p/kg for Suffolk’s from Messrs A&R Lyle, Staingills purchased by Mr Nick Bellas, Shap.
Hoggs fetched a top price of 209.5p/kg for Continentals shown by Messrs R Hall & Sons, Inglewood Edge bought by Mr A Slack, Stoneriggs. Top price per head was £100 also from Inglewood Edge purchased by Mr Robert Skelton, Sunnyslack.

Trade was the strongest yet and more could have been sold to vendors advantage. Averages were way above deadweight comparisons. Vendors should also compare averages of other recent sales in the Farmers Weekly or Farmers Guardian to todays results.
The top price of 182.5p per kg was paid for a Limousin Heifer shown by Messrs N Dixon, Low Whinnow Farm, Thursby and was purchased by Mullholland Butchers, Great Orton. Another heifer shown by Messrs Dixon made top price of £1203.93 per head for a British Blue purchased by R J Harrison.
Steers reached a top price of 173.5p pr kg for three different beasts. A Limousin shown by Telfer Brothers, Make Me Rich, Capheaton, A Blonde shown by Ashburner Ltd., High House, Sandwith and also a British Blue shown by G B Wright & Son, Tarnrigg Moor, Oulton this beast was purchased by R J Harrison, Butcher, King Street, Wigton. The top price per head for steers went to £1236.35 for a Limousin which was shown by GN & DM Bowe, Bothel Parks, Bothel.
The top price for Bulls was 173.5p per kg for a Limousin Bull which was shown by Hartley Farming Ltd., Prospect House Farm, Isel. Top price per head of £1226.22 was paid for a British Blue shown by R E Miller, West Farm, Aspatria.
A good show of quality hoggs met a sparkling trade to equal that of a fortnight and despite some plainer offerings that did not help the overall average of 164.78p per kg – a strong return.
Top price of £97 was paid for Texel Hoggs shown by Messrs RE Miller, West Farm, Aspatria. Messrs RE Miller also had top price of 212p per kg this was paid for another two pens of Texel Hoggs one of which was purchased by Top Deal Meats.
The first meaningful offering of Lambs resulting in a strong trade. Top price of 233.30p pr kg was paid for Texel lambs shown by Messrs Ramsay, Dockray Hall, Wigton. Top price of £102 per head was paid for Texel lambs shown by Messrs Beaty, Newton Field, Allonby and were purchased by RJ Harrison.
