THE demolition of Longtown’s axed secondary school will begin next month.
Lochinvar School is set to be flattened in December, with work starting on December 15.
The site will be re developed as part of the town’s revamp Longtown Moving Forward, with some land sold for housing to fund the project.
Arrangements will be made to ensure access to the library, children’s centre and nursery are not affected while demolition takes place.
When the school’s closure was announced last year, residents hoped the building could still exist as an adult education centre.
But proposals drawn up as part of the Longtown Moving Forward consultation all pointed to the demolition of the school and the sale of the land.
All pupils have been transferred to William Howard School in Brampton.
A contract for the demolition is out to tender.
It will cost £160,000 to knock down the school; the annual bill for maintaining it would have been £150,000.
A county council cabinet voted to knock down the building on September 1, after officials recommended that the school be demolished and the ground cleared for redevelopment.
